  • Porter-Leath’s Parents as Teachers (PAT) program equips mothers with prenatal and postnatal tools to promote positive development, giving their children the best start in life.

PAT provides educational and developmentally appropriate activities for prenatal mothers and children up to 5 years old or entering kindergarten. Families are enrolled prenatally or as infants, and are encouraged to stay in the program until the baby is 3 years of age or until they enter kindergarten.

PAT is a voluntary program provided at no cost to families in Shelby & Fayette counties.

PAT is an evidence-based curriculum that focuses on promoting positive parent-child interaction & parenting skills, health and development of young children (physically, mentally, and emotionally), and family well-being (e.g., mother’s health, social support, access to community resources, meeting basic needs related to employment, housing, and education).

PAT services are delivered to families in their homes by Certified Parent Educators who have been specifically trained in the PAT program. Each family receives two one-hour visits a month. Each visit is planned to meet the needs of the parent and child and includes a number of screenings or assessments on mothers and children (developmental screenings, postnatal depression screens, HOME environment, Life Skills Progressions, ACES, and HITS).

The program provides monthly parent meetings for parents to learn about invaluable community resources and to collaborate with other families in the program.

  • LENA Home is ideal for coaching and home visitation programs that would like to supplement their curriculum with objective feedback from LENA technology. Home visitors using LENA technology to measure language gain objective insights on home talk that can be used to inform and motivate parents and track progress toward increasing quality interactions. Productivity is increased through clear reports that provide insights on how much adults spoke to their child, back and forth exchanges between parents and child, and TV and electronic sound throughout the day. The feedback is designed to show progress over time. You can also receive scheduling and text reminders that simplify logistics and ease the burden on home visitors, implementation support, one year of technical assistance, and two validated measures of child language behavior. LENA Home is best suited for families with a young child that has an IFSP or suspected disability.
