Literacy Mid-South Hiring Over 100 Part-Time Tutors

Tutors will be part of community-wide effort to support reading development; pay starts at $20/hour

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (July 12, 2023) – Literacy Mid-South is hiring over 100 part-time tutors to support the organization’s Tutor901 program, which provides in-school, high-impact literacy tutoring to 2nd-4th grade students in Shelby County. 

Tutors will work with small groups of elementary students, supporting their development of critical foundational reading skills. This is an ideal opportunity for Memphians who are looking to make a valuable difference in students’ reading development, or who are interested in pursuing a career in education. Qualified applicants will receive paid training on tutoring and literacy interventions and will be supported by experienced educators.

Tutors will receive at least $20 per hour, with individual compensation based on previous education levels, and will work between 9-18 hours per week.

Tutors report meaningful impact

Tutor901 tutors who served during the 2022-23 school year reported making a difference in students’ reading abilities and having learned from the experience. In a recent survey:

  • 92% reported making meaningful connections with the students they tutored;

  • 84% felt they made an impact on the reading abilities of the students they delivered;

  • 100% have a better understanding of the challenges faced by students reading below grade level;

  • 95% felt adequately prepared to lead tutoring sessions;

  • 89% said they would like to return as a tutor next semester; 

  • 42% are more interested in pursuing a career in education as a result of their time as a tutor.
