🗣️ Adult ELL Tutor

national public service — a paid volunteer role through AmeriCorps

Service Term: 300 hours

Stipend: $3,000

Time Commitment: ~7 hrs/week

Schedule Options:

  • 4 sessions/week at 90 minutes instruction+60 minutes prep/recap

  • Tutor-set schedule; flexible days & times

  • Schedule includes planning time and evening availability for ELL classes

What You’ll Do:

ELL Tutors help adult learners build English language skills using English Forward—a conversation-based, goal-centered curriculum. With materials and training provided by Literacy Mid-South, members will:

  • Lead 4 class sessions per week (90 minutes each)

  • Use the English Forward curriculum and tools provided by Literacy Mid-South

  • Assist with goal-setting and assess learner progress

  • Coordinate or attend field trips to help learners practice English in real-life settings

  • Maintain accurate records and complete pre/post assessments

  • Attend regular training and check-ins

Where You’ll Serve:

Public libraries, community centers, virtual platforms, and employer sites across the Memphis area.

Adult Literacy Tutors support adults who struggle with reading and writing. Help them build skills and reach personal and professional goals through one-on-one tutoring.

  • Use learner-centered strategies to support reading, writing, and comprehension

  • Set goals with learners and track their growth using simple tools

  • Help plan and attend learner-led workshops and community events

  • Accurately complete assessments and progress tracking

  • Participate in member reflection, check-ins, and training
