Adult ELL

Volunteers support adult learners in reading, writing, speaking, listening, digital literacy, workforce English, and citizenship preparation through welcoming, culturally responsive instruction.

Lit Street Team

Volunteers bring joyful literacy activities, book access, family engagement, and literacy-rich enrichment to community-based out-of-school time programs during the school year and summer.

Powered by Reading Partners Tutoring

Volunteers provide structured one-on-one or small-group reading support at UniverCity Family CDC using Powered by Reading Partners tools, lessons, and assessments.

Adult ELL

  • Lead or support adult ELL sessions and help learners build practical English skills for everyday life, work, family, school, community participation, and citizenship.

  • Use approved materials, including Burlington English and ProLiteracy resources when applicable, to support reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, conversation, and digital literacy.

  • Current placements include Memphis Rise Academy, Bert Ferguson Community Center, and Shelby Literacy Center at Peace Tree United Methodist Church.

  • Volunteers support learner goal-setting, track attendance and progress, maintain required service records, and communicate with site and Literacy Mid-South staff.

  • Volunteers receive program orientation, Adult ELL-specific training and coaching, site orientation, ongoing check-ins, and professional development.

Lit Street Team

  • Facilitate read-alouds, small-group reading, phonemic-awareness games, vocabulary activities, literacy-as-recreation, and book-choice activities for elementary-age students.

  • Connect children and families to books and resources through family literacy engagement, Lit Bag preparation or distribution, book organization, and community literacy events.

  • During the school year, volunteers generally serve in afterschool settings; during summer, they support daytime programming. Exact placements and schedules follow partner needs.

  • Volunteers may serve at multiple community-based sites. Placements are generally about two months ad are matched based on program need, site readiness, volunteer availability, and partner fit.

Powered by Reading Partners Tutoring

  • Provide consistent one-on-one or small-group reading support using approved Powered by Reading Partners lessons, tools, and activities that build phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, onfidence, and engagement.

  • Volunteers maintain a consistent schedule so students receive regular, relationship-centered support across afterschool and summer programming.

  • Use approved assessments and accurately track tutoring sessions, attendance, service hours, and student records. Communicate regularly with Literacy Mid-South staff about student progress and support needs.

  • Receive LiteracyCorps and AmeriCorps orientation, Powered by Reading Partners Tutor training, site orientation, and ongoing coaching and check-ins from Literacy Mid-South staff.
