A Framework for Effective Literacy Organizations

Literacy Mid-South has identified 5 standards that are the framework for all aspects of the Read Memphis Project training and certification program. Programs may look different, but there are standards that guide them to deliver effective services and facilitate long-term sustainability.  These standards strengthen key functions of an adult education program, and they are applicable in stand-alone programs, as well as programs where adult education is one component. The standards encompass the following: community, organizational infrastructure, volunteer management, student services, and instruction & support.

The instructional approach helps adults get the knowledge and skills they need to be productive in the workplace, family, and community.  The major program areas are literacy, Pre-GED, and English as a Second Language (ESL). These programs emphasize basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and English language competency.
