Third Grade Collaborative Action Network

As part of a county-wide partnership to improve education learning outcomes, Literacy Mid-South is leading a Collaborative Action Network comprised of community organizations, school districts, businesses, and nonprofits. The purpose of the Third Grade Reading CAN is to take advantage of the resources already available in Shelby County as well as the work members are currently doing  to improve the rates of reading proficiency at 3rd for every Shelby County child. Given the research on the areas that have the greatest influence on third grade reading proficiency, the network has segmented its plan into two strategic areas:

  1. Develop/adopt and deploy reading interventions or support services in afterschool and summer programs, and support school-based reading interventions.
  2. Engage parents and the community (e.g. civic organiations, faith communities, etc.) in adopting practices to improve attendance and reading proficiency.
