What is the Smart Memphis Coalition?
Smart Memphis is a major Literacy Mid-South initiative to provide training, resources and visibility to a coalition of non-profit organizations, educational institutions, businesses, government agencies and individuals who work to improve the learning skills of children and adults in the Mid-South.
Smart Memphis also develops highly visible community literacy events (for example “Read Across America Day”) and hosts an annual literacy summit to develop local expertise and keep literacy at the forefront of the community priorities.
Membership is free and open to everyone who desires to build a great community of literate citizens. The Smart Memphis Coalition offers trainings for literacy-based programs, brown bag lunches for tutors, monthly meetings for service providers, and many other special events.
What We Offer:
Collaborations are essential for literacy and education providers in the Mid-South. That's why we've created the collaborations fund, which provides grants to collaborating agencies to reduce overhead and provide additional educational resources for underserved communities.
Training and Technical Assistance Fund
Literacy Mid-South now offers a Training and Technical Assistance Fund for participants of the Seeding Success Third Grade Reading Collaborative Action Network. Funds are dispersed at the discretion of staff. Organizations must demonstrate ongoing participation in the Third Grade Reading CAN events to be eligible for funds.
Annual Literacy Summit
Join nonprofit and government agencies, community advocates, volunteers and adult learners to network, develop new skills and share promising practices. This literacy event offers a wide range of sessions presented by local, state and national educators. Sessions are designed to provide you with new ideas and hands-on strategies that you can put to work for your program and students. Sessions promise to be interactive and are sure to help expand your knowledge on a variety of topics related to adult basic education, literacy, advocacy and family literacy.
Advanced Training for Education Partners
(A collaboration between Literacy Mid-South, Shelby County Schools, and the United Way of the Mid-South.)
This lunchtime series provides practical information and “hands-on” techniques to volunteer tutors, mentors, and non-profit literacy agency professionals who work with school age students. The sessions are taught by master teachers and experienced professionals who focus on the topics students struggle with the most. Sessions are usually held on the first Friday of each month from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm from September to April.
Community Round Table Events
Smart Memphis Coalition brings literacy organizations from around the Mid-South together quarterly to discuss hot topics such as social media, grant funding, best practices and advocacy.
