How We Teach
Small Learning Groups:
Adult students on the same grade level are sometimes placed into small groups of between two and five. The group always share common interests, whether it is a desire to attain their GED or gain a literacy-based skill. Volunteers facilitate these learning groups using innovative, collaborative learning models that make use of real-world examples and allow the students to learn at their own pace.
Individual Tutoring:
Volunteers work one-on-one with adult students to help them attain their GED and acheive personal goals like money management, helping their children with homework, and reading the Bible.
Interest-Based Classes:
Adults learn differently from children. That's why Literacy Mid-South provides classroom instruction to students that combines the students' interests with innovative learning strategies. Classes provide literacy-based skills that allow students to progress in their reading level while learning about specific subjects. We offer classes like Driver's Education Prep, Citizenship, Health Families and Communities, and more. All of these classes are taught by volunteers using national and local curriculum.
Computer Lab:
Volunteers assist adult learners navigate the internet, learn basic typing, and apply for jobs online through our computer lab. Literacy Mid-South uses a variety of different technologies to assist students. We use iPads, laptops, voice recognition software, and more.
Tutor an Adult
How can I become a tutor?
Literacy Mid-South offers tutor training workshops several times a year. Members of our Tutor Training Team share from their experiences as they guide volunteers through the basic skills of tutoring. (All materials needed for the workshop are provided.) New volunteers take a tour of the center, meet with the program staff, and explore resources and materials.
First, review the upcoming tutor training workshops, and choose one that fits your schedule.
Second, fill out an application, and return it to our center. You will be registered for the tutor training workshop of your choice as long as room is available. Confirmation will follow by e-mail.
Third, attend a tutor training workshop. There you will meet program staff and current tutors. You will also receive materials and instructions on how to begin.
Lastly and certainly not least, we are glad you have decided to become a part of our team!
