Did you know it costs $500 per year per student to teach our adult learners how to read and write? Each year, Literacy Mid-South serves more than 400 adults who desperately want to move forward in their lives. More than 250 volunteers serve every week at Literacy Mid-South to help our students overcome illiteracy.
In the United States alone, the most recent statistics show that 34 million adults are below what are considered levels of basic literacy. That means that these people cannot fill out a job application or read the label on a prescription. In Memphis, more than 120,000 people are considered functionally illiterate. YOU CAN HELP!
How Our Volunteers Can Help
Tutor-A-Thon works like a traditional "walk-a-thon" style fundraiser, but takes place online instead of the streets. You commit by signing up on the Tutor-A-Thon website, then asking your family and friends to "sponsor" you by pledging any amount. They're sponsoring your volunteering from February 1-March 31, 2013. Imagine - if 30 of us recruit 20 friends to give just $25 each, we can raise $10,000. Now that's volunteer power! With your participation, we can reach that goal and more.
