YMCA Literacy Volunteer AmeriCorps Member, Start Date - 03/15/2021

This is a one (1) year-long volunteer opportunity. VISTA members receive a stipend set at a "poverty wage".

The YMCA Literacy Volunteer AmeriCorps VISTA seeks to develop and implement systems for community volunteer recruitment and management in order to implement effective literacy programming for targeted groups of children in low-income areas. Research has demonstrated the benefit of quality OST literacy instruction for elementary students. Aligned with our county's school districts and a network of partners, Literacy Mid-South seeks improve third grade reading proficiency throughout Shelby County--but especially in the underserved areas of the city of Memphis. This AmeriCorps member will support one of those partners--YMCA.

Objectives of the Service Term

  • Assess the current state of YMCA’s efforts to recruit and manage literacy volunteers and create a plan of action.
  • Support the design of an organized approach to managing and recruiting literacy volunteers.
  • Ensure sustainability of work completed during the service year through documentation, conversations, and trainings.
